Exodus 8 one China Project

2008 August 7

A friend of ours Eddie Romero has traveled to Beijing and has carried out some protests: Below is the explanation and some videos of the event. Please follow the links and join/follow the groups to find out what is going on.

What took place:

Two attention-getting events occurred in hotel rooms in two Beijing hotels on the evening of Tuesday August 5th 2008, solely carried out by Pastor E. Perez Romero of Haceinda Christian Fellowship, La Puente California.

In these events, as a culmination of his Exodus8one project, he sought to bring attention to the plight of people of all faiths in China, as well as highlighting the increasing human rights deficiencies in that country.

He did this by creating artistic murals on the walls of the two hotel rooms. He also made 2 effigies to illustrate those who have been effectively silenced by the authorities of the Peoples Republic of China.

He filmed these events and they are now beginning to appear on U-tube and other similar websites, under his title “IamGadfly”

Having completed the project he has left the area and will remain hidden until the completion of the Olympic Games so as not to disrupt them in any way. After the Games he will surrender himself to the authorities.
Reliable sources in Beijing inform us that local media were able to enter these rooms and confirm that this happened, but that shortly afterwards the rooms were completely cleaned of all signs of his work.

With all due respect– while I agree with the idea of this protest, it was not just to cause damage to these 2 hotels like this without due compensation to the hotels themselves, and the lack of such compensation has damaged the thrust of the protest. I’ve spoken to neutral observers and the response has been disheartening– remarks about “camera-hogging narcissism” and “too much time on one’s hands.”

It would have been feasible to leave a form of payment (an estimate, of if nothing else a portion of the costs as an IOU) in the hotels.

I agree with what Mr. Romero is trying to do here– Falun Gong deserves the right to flourish in China, as do other faiths. And Mr. Romero’s advocacy for political prisoners in China is perhaps the most important anyone can undertake– freeing them would be valuable for China and the world.

Unfortunately, some of the details were poorly thought-out, and he looks like a vandal to many people when his objective was anything but.

Damn Christians…keep getting in peoples faces.
Another reason that America is THE laughing stock of the world.

When will we understand that this self indulgent, spoiled-child, arrogant behavior is really stupid and does nothing but make people more set against Christianity?

I feel the urge to slap people who get in my face and try to witness their faith.

This is just as bad as GWB going to China and condemning his hosts…STUPID

Sarah: In someways i think i agree with you, in terms of a good kingdom perspective perhaps he could have been to most polite protest ever. However not many protestors would do something like this then purposefully turn themselves in. This is his intention to be arrested for his actions as part of the action itself. I wonder how much this would then be an issue if he had paid all costs upfront?

thewordofme: So often i live my life agreeing with you; christian who constantly getting in your face forcing their belief and faith down your throats, who wants that. I am a christian myself and it annoys me. In this case i cannot agree though.

Eddie Romero is not simply there to preach to the people who watch the YouTube videos, or indeed to those in China. As a Christian he believes that there should be people who stand for those who have no voice. And so he is campaigning for all those who have no voice in China. Groups that remain highly sensitive with the Chinese government — Tibetan Buddhists, Uighur Muslims, the Falun Gong spiritual movement.

This is not just about one guy wanting to get in peoples faces because he is a christian nut, but someone who genuinely believes that his faith demands that he speaks up for those without a voice.

    Proverbs 31:8-9

8 “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.

    9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
